Speeding offenses in Illinois are broken up into petty and misdemeanor offenses. Speeding up to 25 over the limit is considered a petty offense and is only punishable by a fine up to $1000.00. There is no possibility of jail time for a petty offense, however depending on how many miles per hour you were traveling above the speed limit, the offense carries a heavier cost to your driving record (see chart below) Speeding offenses on your record can cause your insurance premiums to rise, and these offenses are recorded on your driving record which will be used the next time you are charged with a traffic offense.
As you can imagine, the more violations you have on your record, the less likely the judge or the prosecutor will be to grant you a lenient sentence or a low fine.Speeding 26 or more over the limit will result in a misdemeanor charge which opens you up to possible jail time and a much higher maximum fine (for more information, click here).
- Speeding 1-10 mph over the posted limit: 5 points
- Speeding 11-14 mph over the posted limit: 15 points
- Speeding 15-25 mph over the posted limit: 20 points
- Speeding over 25 mph over the posted limit: 50 points
